What's worse than a model that is anxious or stressed? The more he / she will be comfortable, the more your images will look natural.
Meet with your model, buy them a coffee, and start by talking a bit before tackling the "serious stuff". You can start to submit your portfolio and your approach to photography, for example.
Above all, do not let them be overwhelmed by your equipment. SLR up with a set of lights, reflectors and umbrellas, it can be overwhelming for someone who is not accustomed to it.
Before shooting, you can show how your equipment, what are all these awesome accessories ... We can also let them try the camera, show what are the lights on to explain briefly the differences in rendering with a particular accessory or umbrella ...
Your model will be much less anxious and feel at ease.
Some photographers ask their models to bring their favourite CD for the photo shoot.
Anything that can make your model feel good is welcome!
2. Let your model know what you expect him / her:
Have with you a sample of photos that show attitudes such as the one you want to have is a great way to understand the model what you expect.
You can select images from magazines, for example.
You can also show your portfolio, family photos and any type of records you want.
3. So that the model feels at ease, talk to them.
During the shooting, he / she can tell you what they did last weekend, last vacation and so on. Try running a more passionate discussion perhaps, for example by launching a debate on a subject in which he / she is very involved.
4. Be a teacher and explain technical terms
Do not use a technical term: do not play the "who knows", the risk is to impress your model and strengthen its apprehension. Use simple words and be a teacher.
5. Need a smile? Let him tell jokes.
Nothing worse than a forced smile, or a "cheese"...
The best method to capture a smile or a laugh, is if it's natural. But a session of shooting is not necessarily funny.
Ask your model to tell you the 5 jokes that he / she prefers, or tell you about a sketch of comedy show they like. Nothing like laughter to trigger a natural look. You can capture the smiles and laughter on the spot.
To conclude, you guessed it: the model must first have a good time. Then they will be the most natural, and will reveal their true nature!
